More than 600 elementary students from 35 teams recently participated in the Cherokee County School District (CCSD) Elementary Science Olympiad competition at Creekview High School. Science Olympiad is designed to encourage students to explore new and challenging ways of solving problems as part of a team. Sponsored by Cobb EMC, the CCSD competition included 18 events selected for their strong relationship to existing elementary science curriculum.
More than 100 awards were presented to individual students. Team awards were presented to Holly Springs Elementary School STEM Academy Team-1, Bascomb Elementary School Team-Blue and Boston Elementary School Team-1. These teams will have the opportunity to advance to the state competition.
The Georgia Elementary Science Olympiad will be held on May 17, 2014 at Kennesaw State University. Georgia hosts one of the largest ESO competitions with 65 teams participating. The 65 slots are filled by a lottery system of the top winners from local competitions.
Science Olympiad is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of K-12 science education, increasing student interest in science, creating a technologically literate workforce and providing recognition for outstanding achievement by both students and teachers. These goals are achieved by participating in Science Olympiad tournaments, incorporating Science Olympiad into classroom curriculum and attending professional development workshops.
